Scarabeus’ directors and associates regularly
lecture on performance arts at institutions across the
globe. The company has also been involved in the training
processes of professional companies such as Black Mime
Theatre, the Black Women Training Project and in projects
such as Haringey Council’s ‘Personnel for
Childcare and Training’ project. Our professional
development menu includes:
Skills based techniques
Developing an understanding of body control, alignment,
freedom of movement, focus of energy, weight and rhythm.
Working with partners; learning about giving and taking
weight, lifting and support work, balance and counter-balance,
This relates in particular to acrobalance, stilt work,
aerial and abseiling work.
Theatre based skills
To develop an understanding of characterisation by using
various approaches, to explore the use of the voice
and to experiment with various styles of theatre. Use
of improvisation as the basis for devising work based
on physical/visual theatre.
Commedia dell'Arte
We use masks, improvisation, basic acrobatics and stunt
fighting to teach this vibrant and complete form of
theatre from sixteenth century Italy.
Integrating Theatre / Design / Music / Video Skills
Combining all of the above with sound, video, set and
equipment to discover how they work together, with
the possibilities of using each as a starting point.
Site specific performance
Lectures and seminars on the creation of site specific
work analysing issues such as: integrating the aesthetic
of a site with our physicality; flights and constraints
to creativity; making art that belongs to the everyday;
and the politics of space.
Intensive Residencies
Scarabeus can provide an opportunity for participants
to work intensively with the company. This can include
the workshop components already mentioned, although
it will be specifically designed as part of a larger
framework suited to the group, space and duration of
residency. Participants will have a unique opportunity
to experience the working practices of the company
first hand.
